Surina Morris
Story
Hi I’m Surina and I’m a Grade 6 student at Aspendale Primary School. For the past 5 years I have been donating my hair to Alopecia Australia.
What is Alopecia? Alopecia means hair loss. There are lots of types of Alopecia. Some types cause you to lose hair in a single area, whereas others may cause you to lose hair from several areas of your head and body.
I have donated my hair both in Grade 1 where I chopped off 36cm, and in Grade 3 where I chopped around 30cm. This year my goal is 40cm which would mean I will have donated over 1m of hair over the duration of my primary school years.
This hair goes and gets made into wigs.
You may be wondering why I would give up my hair. My hair grows quickly but kids with Alopecia are not so lucky as their hair may never grow. If I need to have short hair for about a year to give them a tool to help them feel more confident and put a smile on their face then I am more than willing to do so.
Thank you so much for reading this and have a lovely rest of your day.
A message from Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation
All hair donated to AAAF is sent to wig makers who specialize in making hair pieces for medical purposes. We receive funds from the wig makers and these go to support our Wigs For Kids program, which provides financial grants to help families with the costs of wigs. So your hair donation helps kids with Alopecia Areata twice!
Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation Inc
Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation Inc. (AAAF), is established to be the national Australia body supporting research to find a cure or acceptable treatment for all forms of Alopecia Areata, support those with the disease and their families, and inform the public about all forms of Alopecia Areata.
Our Service philosophy is to give each person the best chance of managing their alopecia journey positively, the whole family and each individual needs to be supported to manage their unique experience. By reducing the financial and emotional stress and enabling children, young people, adults and their support networks to develop their strengths and skills, AAAF assists the whole family to achieve that positive journey.
